while I was driving on the freeway with my 2001 pathfinder SE (5sp manual), I heard a screw fell off. I thought it was another car or something I ran over. But after a few seconds, the engine died. I tried to start a couple of times and it wouldn't start. I began pulling to the side of the freeway and tried to start it again, and it did start. The steering wheel was a lot heavier this time. I pulled to the side of the freeway and noticed that the steel thing holding the fan was bent out of place, so the pulley that was holding the belt was not in place.
After a while I noticed coolant leaking.
what could have caused my fan to just fall out of place? is it my water pump?
That is your water pump. It has the spindle for the fan. I have never heard of a water pump basically decinegrating like that. How many miles do you have on your X?

Depending on where you go, it will probably range between 4 to 8 hours. While you are having it done, you should do the timing belt. Have you had the timing belt done before? I think it's supposed to be done every 60k. I don't think they put a chain in till the new 4L engine.

I thought it had a timing belt, cuz the manual said to replace it at 105K. I called the dealer to inquire about it and apparently, it has a timing chain. they even asked for the VIN because some of the 2001 models have a timing belt in them.
Sound like it's time to get your truck worked on. At least you will be good for another 100k. It's good they don't have the belt, which gets changed at 60k in the old Pathfinders. Chains are much better and less to worry about.

according to my mechanic, it wasn't the water pump, but the idler pulley that broke. pieces of it or the fan hit the radiator.
so I need to replace the radiator, the fan, the idler pulley. There's one other part, which I forgot. Still waiting for a price as some of those he said are available only on the dealer.
this truck got into an accident about 9K miles ago. I'm trying to find out if one of the idler pulley was replaced and might be able to go back to the shop to fix it.
