94 pathfinder ENGINE OVERHAUL!!!!

Hey guys i'm a newbie here.I have a 94 pathfinder SE 4x4 with 186,000 miles and VG30E engine. The car runs very well but lately there has been a loud ticking noise coming from the engine. The ticking usually comes on when i warm up the engine but stops once i start driving. Also when i stop at a red light you can hear it ticking but once you drive again it goes away.A friend of mine told me i might have problems with my valves.Acceleration has also become poor .
So to make a long story short i'm thinking of overhauling the engine myself since i'm not working right now and i have a lot of time on my hands.I also cannot afford an engine swap right now but i definetly can afford the engine overhaul kit.
My question to you guys is, HOW hard is it to overhaul this engine? Has anybody here ever done this and what problems did you encounter? I'm pretty handy with my car since i fix everything myself but i know this won't be that easy
Please guys i would very much appreciate any advice. THANKS

nice website guys

Usually the ticking on warmup is due to the exhaust manifolds. I would try replacing them with some headers before doing a complete overhaul.

Ditto. The lifters don't usually tick all the time.
