Going through 4WD shifting - finnicky?

So I test drove the '98 4WD XE a bit more today. Are these things really finnicky about how they shift through the various 4WD settings? There were no issues going from 2H to 4H and back... but I encountered a fair amount of gear grinding going back and forth from 4H to 4L. I was at a stop and in neutral at the time. Also going back from 4L - 4H - 2H I had to play around with the lever to get the 4WD idiot light to go off, even though I was clearly in 2H.

Thanks -
Jeff

4H - 2H can grind if its not a quick smooth motion. 4H - 2H can stick in 4WD but it will usually release if you let off the gas to relieve driveline tension or take a turn. If it still won't release it can be because of slight differences in tire diameter, tread wear, air pressure etc.
