HELP! Harmonic Balancer Problem!!

I can't seem to keep this balancer from spinning! This Haynes manual says to take of the starter and put a prybar between the flywheel gears. But the problem is I can't get the starter off! Does anyone have any suggestions or exact instructions for 1. Another way to keep the crank from spinning besides removing the starter or 2. how to get the higher starter bolt out(what tools specifically)? Thanks guys!!

You're going through a lot of effort to get that starter off, why not get your hands on an impact wrench? If you can't get a compressor and air impact wrench, harbor freight has some fairly inexpensive electric impact wrenches that have enough torque.

Without an impact wrench the other alternative is to hook a long bar to the bolt and rest it against the frame. Then just bump the starter to loosen it. Never tried that but there have been some past posts on it with steps.

If you have an automatic, it'll just spin the torque converter. Remove the top starter bolt through the fenderwell. I use a v-belt pulley wrench to hold the crank while loosening the crank bolt. Or you could just wedge a long breaker bar in there against the frame with a socket on the bolt and bump the starter...
