My 1998 Pathfinder has a dead speedometer and odometer (the later just shows the last mileage before the speedometer stoped working). Is there an easy way to check out if this is a problem on the dash meter, or is the speed sensor? If the speed sensor is bad, wouldn't this influence other things besides not moving the speed needle? I think maybe the speed sensor output signal is also feed to the computer and some other things may go wrong.
If the fuel and temp guages are not working also check the fuse number 7 ( i believe ) in the fuse block.
Like Boogyman said the CEL ( or MIL ) will light, If that's the case it's the speed sensor 1 ( revolution sensor ) and would generate fault code P0720.
Is the Over Drive light flashing ??
There are two computers, Engine Control Module and the Transmission Control Module.
The speed sensor 1 connects to the TCM but also the speedometer ( speed sensor 2 ) outputs to the TCM as well for a back up signal .
Yes, the O/D light will flash something like 30 seconds at startime, then it will remain off.
Now we know :
the speedometer doesn't work
the O / D flashes
What we don't know :
is the " CEL " on ??
You'll have to be more forthcoming on answers and information if you would like help.

Do you mean that there are two speed sensors ?
What I mean is; speed sensor 1 is the revolution sensor that is located on the output shaft from the tranmission. As this shaft turns the sensor will send a signal , which corresponds with the RPM of the spinning shaft , to the TCM which in turn communicates this to the ECM.
Speed sensor 2 ( Vehicle Speed Sensor ) is part of the speedometer which communicates with the TCM and proceses the information for the dial indicator , also outputs back to the TCM to confirm a speed.

Thanks for your help. No, the CEL light has not turn on, except for some seconds
at start up, which I believe is normal.
The speedometer is dead, the odometer show 88636 km, and hasn't move since the speedometer stopped working.
As said before the O/D blinks at start time for something like half a minute, then remains off.
I dissasembled the whole instrumet console, looking for broken connection lines, tested them with ohmeter, they looked fine. No loose cables or connectors either.
All the gauges except for the speedometer and odometer ar working.
I recently replaced the VSS on my 98 4x4 automatic Pathfinder. My speedometer was not dead. The speedometer needle would bounce around quite a bit and then drop to zero, then it would bounce back to the speed I was driving. It got progressively worse during a 2 month period. I struggled with how to diagnose which component was bad too. I finally just bit the bullet and bought a VSS on line. I was very pleased that it was indeed my problem. The gear on the end of the VSS had worn down quite a bit. If you do a search for VSS on this site you should find my post as well as others who have replaced their vss. Good luck.
Thanks Golfer, I''ll go and try to find a speedometer replacement. I hope I can get one, here in Chile ain't easy to get some replacement parts!
MY BAD ! I did miss an important step before replacing the speedometer , pulling out the VSS and checking between pins 1 & 2 of the connector. With your meter in the ohms range you should see approximately 250 ohms.
Check the other posts for part numbers and there is good information & tips how and where to find it.
