Trailer wiring

Hi I have a new 05 Pathy. I have been watching the forum for awhile now....very impressed. Looking at some of the mods people have done have inspired me to try and learn more about my vehicle. I am a complete NOOB (or is that BOOB?) when it comes to vehicles. Anyway, I have curently changed the 4pin trailer plug to a 7pin plug I bought from the dealer. I have to install a trailer break control, and looking at the forum I thought it would be easy that I could install this myself. I bought a Tekonsha Prodigy controller with a Nissan hookup. I took the dash apart and found the plug just as was mentioned in earlier forum postings. I tried to plug the break Nissan harness in and noticed there there were two small ridges in the middle of the plug-in that prevented the harness from being plugged in. I shaved these ridges down and plugged in the break controller, but there is no signal. As I said I am a complete noob so bear with me.... My quess is it is getting no power so I have bought a volt meter to check. My question is how should I check, plug one end into each slot of the plug and the other end touch metal so as to see if I am getting an volt readings? I did check under the hood and noticed there is a trailer break relay, is it possible this is defective? Any help would be greatly appreaciated.

Thank you.

You shouldn't have had to shave off the ridges on the plug. That means you got the wrong one. I would contact tekonsha customer service and see what they say. You don't want to fry your wiring harness, that's expensive. If you have an extra relay, you might try that, but I would call first. No sense wasting money on relays.
