Smile rear axle housing removal

Does anyone have experience removing the rear axle housing assembly off an r50 pathfinder? It has rust all over it and I need to paint over it. Can you reuse old rubber bushing and would it be safe to reuse the fasteners even though they are a little rusty? I have the service manual with directions on how to remove it just wondering if any one has done it themselves. Thanks for any input

I'd replace all the seals and of course you can reuse the bolts, as long as they're not seriously corroded. Clean them up with a wire brush and apply some anti-seize if you have some handy.

When tightening the bolts/fasteners, do it criss-cross like tightening up the lug nuts that way even pressure is applied all around on the cover.

I've never done this to my Nissan but I've done it to my Jeep.

I guess if the bolts are corroded I could replace them with the correct grade from a hardware store? The problem with replacing all the bushings is that they are so expensive. The run anywhere from 5 to 10 bucks each!!

That much!? OK then, reuse the bushings and dab some silicone on them. As for bolts, I'd get them at a automotive parts place, but it's your call.

If you want, get a tube or can of anti-seize, that way it'll prevent the bolts from rusting and seizing.

I just totaled it up. It will cost about $130 to replace all of the bushings excluding tax and shipping. Does anyone know of a place cheaper than 1stnissanparts.com. Thank You.

Axle pics

I'm starting to doubt if this is really worth it. It actually seems like quite a bit when I look at it and I can see several of these bolts breaking. Take a look at my pics. Is there a place I could take it and have them spray some king of coating.[IMG][/IMG]

If I did go ahead and do this should I just use 60 grit sand paper or a paint stripper? Then get some duplicolor products. Does anyone recommend some paint or chemicals?

Take a look at this website www.por15.com. If you use this stuff, it'll save you a lot of work and time. You may want to chip away and scrape away the big rust spots for it to really work in the bad spots.

Just looking at the amount of rust, I can imagine a very long dirty day.

Thanks for your reply. I was on another forum and I just ordered it. It sounds like a great product. I got the starter kit and the chassis coat.
