Please Help

I have a 2001 Pathfinder LE 4wd and need some input on verifying a part. My dealer calls this part a resonator and I call it a three way catalyst or twc. The factory service manual also calls this part and twc or three way catalyst. They still insist it is a resonator so someone please verify this part. Please go to page 10 and look for number 11. Sroll down some on that page and it corresponds to the list as being a three way catalyst.

The part is in fact a rear catalytic converter. There is a front converter listed too. Checked it against my estimating guide that I have in my home PC. Front piece lists for 703.00, no price on rear converter.

Thank you very much for the reply. My dealer is telling me this part is a resonator. I showed them the diagram but they still won't budge. I think they just don't want to have to replace it for free. I've been trough Nissan consumer affairs, but the dealership tells them that this part is a resonator so, of course, they won't replace it. A catalytic converter is warranted by the manufacturer for 8 years or 80,000 miles by the EPA and I apply. They said to replace this "resonator" would cost 800. Is that not the biggest pile of junk you've ever heard? A real resonator does not cost that much. Thank you for the reply. I'm just really frustrated right now!

I've had trouble at the dealership before with warranty coverage, and had to go through Nissan corporate. Sounds like you're already doing that, but the dealership is giving them incorrect info. I'd take the parts diagram into the dealership and ask them to circle the part that needs to be replaced. Or ask them the part #'s that they're going to replace. Then send that info on the Nissan corporate. In my case once they got the correct info they worked with the dealership and got them to perform the work under warranty.

Thank goodness we got the issue resolved. This was the second time I brought that diagram to show them. They refused to believe that. They called it a resonator, a baffle, or a catalyst tube. The showed me the replacement part and the exterior looked the same. They showed me the inside of the new one and you could see through it and it had small holes inside. I never got to see the old part. I still think it is a catalytic converter. The old part had a small exterior crack and supposively that it where the loud rattle was coming from(a 1cm crack???) Recently, I had the cat conv upstream of that one replaced. I'm thinking there was a piece of the old one stuck inside this other one which caused an internal rattle. Before, they told me it was an internal rattle and now they say it is coming from a tiny crack on the housing. Go Figure. Well anyway, the dealership ended up paying the full price of 500 something dollars.
Sorry to babble on, but don't get screwed over by dealerships.

There IS A TSB about this very issue, and I'm going through the SAME problem with my dealership. I have a call into Nissan Corporate as well, so we'll see how that works out.

The TSB is here: Service Bulletins Nissan Cars and Nissan's 'repair kit' for the cracking catalytic converters (I don't give a crap what the dealership is trying to call it) WILL NOT PASS MISSOURI STATE INSPECTION, which requires any repairs to the catalytic converters (or any of the rest of the exhaust system) to be welded, not patched.

I should get a return call from Nissan corporate today, and I'll post my results here.

Well, I didn't get very far with Nissan or complaining to the state. Actually the Service Manager at my local Nissan dealership suggested I just take it to a muffler shop and have them re-weld the tubes instead of using the Nissan repair kit.

I ended up removing the tube myself and took it to a friend who welded it. I ended up paying around $20 for the new gaskets on either end when I re-installed it.

What a pain in the kiester due to a crappy piece of workmanship.
