The door ajar light comes on and off while I'm driving and so does the dome light if I set it to door. I've determined that the culprit is the rear door, but I can't figure where the sensor is or for it. I'd like to be able to drive without a red light in my face, keep the dome light set to door, and install an alarm. The sensors for the other doors were easy to find and appear to be working just fine. Can anyone tell me how the rear is supposed to work?

Rear door as in the rear gate or one of the rear passenger doors?
If it's the gate, the latch system is connected to the rear cargo light. If it's the rear cargo light that comes on and off whenever...? I'd pop the lens off and get a philips screwdriver and take out the entire switch and clean it with contact cleaner and use tissue to wipe the contacts.
I had a problem with my hatch sensor as well. Its a flaw in its design. The door ajar sensor is in the latch mechanism. Its hard to explain without a picture. The latch has a slot that holds onto a loop in the middle of the bottom of the door jam, in that slot there is a black piece of plastic on one side that is supposed to be depressed when the hatch is shut, this breaks the circuit that turns the dome light and door ajar light on. This black peice of plastic has a metal contact of the bottom that can wear out and the side of the plastic piece wears down from use as well. This causes the intermitant behaviour and eventual failure to work at all. I managed to repair mine, I dont know how much it would cost the replace the latch mechanism. I fixed mine by removing the latch so that i could easily work on it and I simply drilled a hole on an angle into the plastic piece and puting the top end of a nail in it to allow the loop to once again push on the plastic piece. The contact that breaks the circuit on mine was worn out as well and I fixed that by putting some solder on it to build it up again. I hope you can understand this, like i said its hard to explain and I'm really thrifty so you may want to just replace the part. Ask me if you want to see a pic

Thanks, Dave. I kind of get what you're saying, but I think I'm going to have to take the latch off to figure out what exactly you're talking about. I don't see anything plastic on the latch. I'd really appreciate a pic, although I can probably figure it out myself. And I take a stab at fixing it myself too. I'm not so much thrifty as cheap.
i realize this is an old post, but i just bought my pathy and was having the same problem. i think i found an easier fix to this, after reading what dave.r12345 said about it being wore out. i tried putting a couple of washers under the striker plate, to raise the striker up. and sure enough, the door ajar light went out and my dome light still works when i open the door
