New to the forum - a few issues with an '01 Pathfinder LE

Hi All,

New to the forum, just bought my first Nissan, an ’01 Pathfinder LE. It has 139,000km on it, so hopefully it keeps me going for a while!

I got a pretty good deal on it, but it does have a few little issues. Hoping some of the experts here can give me some direction. I hope I don’t overwhelm you guys with my first post here!

The MIL came on for me, got a P1320 Ignition Signal error, and a P0305 cylinder misfire error. I replaced the ignition coil, reset the OBD, and figured it was good to go.

No problem, was driving smooth. Shortly after, I had another set of errors appear:

P0420 cat fault right
P0430 cat fault left
P1441 vacuum cut bypass valve or circuit fault

Not happy to see the cat errors… I know these can be expensive. I was a little low on fuel, so I put in another full tank of 92 octane, reset the computer, and the error hasn’t reappeared (though I’ve only put like 50 km on it since doing so).

Does anyone know if the vacuum cut bypass valve can cause the cat errors to appear? And would replacing this valve likely eliminate the cat errors as well? Any tips on how I would go about doing this?

Issue 2: The truck drives and handles well, but whenever I’m steering left the truck makes a slight ‘buzzing’ noise. The noise seems to be more apparent at higher speeds and harder cornering. One of my friends did a bit of a visual inspection when we did the front brakes; he figures it’s coming from the power steering rack. Do the symptoms I’ve described sound like the rack could be causing it? Has anybody replaced the rack themselves yet?

Lastly – I didn’t realize there was a 2001 & 2001.5 model Pathfinder until browsing this forum. How would I know which model I have? It was build in April of 2000.

Appreciate any advice you may have!

Cheers,

Dan

I belive the 01.5 Pathy's start at 550,000 and up on the VIN and/or were made in/after July. Check your door frame.

Hi Dan,

I've got an '01 Pathy as well, and also live in Canada. At 78,000 I had a MIL light, and Nissan told me that I had 2 ignition coils failing. They suggested I replace all of them even though only 2 were failing, as the rest will fail eventually, and I'd be back again for the same problem. He said that a new coil will have a different resistance than a used but functional coil, and it was important to replace all 6. I replaced all 6 (they're bloody expensive), and never had a MIL light again, now I'm 95,000km.

The buzzing noise is probably you're exhaust shields rattling. They rust up rather quickly, become loose and rattle during turns, or during acceleration. Mine have been rattling since I bought the car at 53,000km, and I've even seen some pieces of the shield fall off. I don't think they're very important, so I'm driving it.

Hope that helps...

Joe.

Thanks for the replies guys. Just wanted to give you a quick update.

I got a second opinion on the 'buzzing' - friend figured it was a wheel bearing, which in hindsite makes a lot of sense. Happy to say the problem's solved. Cost me $50 in parts and a few hours time.

Also, regarding the three error codes I had come up, I just reset the MIL, put in a full tank of premium, and the light hasn't come on again after approxiamtly 500km of driving. Hopefully it'll stay that way!

i also had the 0420, 0430 codes on my 01' QX4. there is a TSB out from nissan saying "do not replace any parts for these codes" just take it to the dealer and tell them the codes and let them know that you know about the TSB and they will reflash your ECU. mine did the same thing the light would come on and then go off or i would reset it and it would come back on. mine mil has been off now for 7000 miles. there is no problem with those codes.

I too am getting the error codes 420 and 430. My 2001 PF w/ 144k km is running like crap intermittently (weekly). It jumps/stutters, loses power, engine flaring on top of that too!!

My engine light has been on and off for probably close to 2 years now. Initially their error codes said engine coils. I had a few but not all of them replaced more than a year ago but the problems have still been occuring. Now the codes say 420 and 430 as well as 159 and 158. Mechanic wants me to spend $2,100+ on catalytic conv. x 2 replacement.

Any suggestions??

mine was doind the same thing, it feels like the transmission is acting up. Turned out to be MAF sensor. it is about $700 new but I put in a used one for $125 and is fine for the last 4 months. Check out www.partrunner.com. The used one is a gamble.

There is a software update for 01 PF ECU. I did this at dealer and my "catalyst efficiency low" code (dont remember the code number) went away.

I am starting to have the problem with the P0430 error on my 2003 Pathy, is there any information about that. I had the codes cleared and 300 miles later the service light turned on and low and behold the same error.
