01 Engine Swap. What equipment do I need?

All,

Well the saga of my overheating pathy is in a new chapter.

For those who don't know, she overheated. Headgaskets were the culprit. These were changed by a shop at great cost to me. Unfortunatly there was unseen damage and now there is no compression in cylinder 1.

So.... the options:

See what a dealer will give me for the trade.

Have a shop put a used engine in.

Pick up a used engine and attempt the swap myself.

I think I'll take at least a $5k hit on trade so...

What equipment do I need to accomplish the swap myself? The more detail the better.
I'm figuring an engine hoist and hand tools. Is special equipment needed to pull the tranny? What parts should I have on hand to replace during the swap? Etc...

Thanks in advance for all the great advice!

You guys rock!

Download the factory service manual here http://www.phatg20.net/modules.php?n...ownload&cid=76

It has step by step instructions on what to do. Google win rar to unzip the files.

Many junk yards know of cheap shops that will do a quick engine shop. Dig around and you may get lucky.

Its decided....

I managed to find a used motor with 56k miles.... $1647 delivered to the dealer.

The dealer quoted $1350-$1500 to do the swap... So the motor will arrive tomorrow and I took the pathy over there tonight.

Hopefully everything goes well and the dealer doesn't try to gouge me for "extras"

The service manager reallt busted my bubble when he confirmed that in the worst case scenario for replacing headgaskets the bill would have been around $2k. (Since I paid $4600 to have the gaskets done 4000 miles ago)

Lesson learned. Pay to get the diagnosis and don't feel obligated to the shop who performed the diagnosis.

Thanks for all the input guys!

My brother also has an 01 Pathfinder LE that needed a new engine. We got a used one installed for 2300. Check around and make sure you are getting a good deal on a used engine. The one we got only had 48,000 on it and was about 900-1000 bucks.
