I have a 2002 Pathy LE with 50K miles. It is time for a brake job. Is it a DIY or should I have it done at a shop? I'm not a mechanic but have done a lot of casual work on my cars including fluid changes, spark plugs, etc.
Also, what about some of these slotted rotors that are on eBay? Are they junk? Should I stick to OEM all the way?
DIY, its very simple if you have the right tools. I beleive the caliper is held with 2 - 14' bolts. Once you have removed the caliper you will need to push in the pistons. i used a tool my dad has, but i didn't remove the master cylinder's cap and brake fluid had no where to go (it was hard as hell) I figured it out after a couple minutes. After that just drop in the new pads and instal the 2 bolts.
I havent seen or tried the brake rotors off ebay for the p/f, i tried a set on my escort and they made little to no difference. it wasn't until i bought some good brake pads that i noticed a difference, but that could have just been brake pads....try them out and then leave an opinion.
If you are only doing the brake pads, its not difficult. If you want to replace the rotor, it is more involved.. you will need a hub locknut remover tool to take the rotor off. You can use the hub tool for a Honda Passport or Isuzu Trooper to fit the pathfinder hub. Then you need to follow the bearing pre-load procedure explained in the service manual when you put the new rotor back in..

Well, I ordered new rotors, brake pads and the hub tool. When I went to take off the rotors, I noticed that the blots on the hub assembly were stripped. The right one was fine, but the left was bad. Almost all of the bolts were stripped. These are the outer bolts and not the bolts from the wheel hub to the rotors.
So I ended up only changin the pads. I wanted to see where I could find a wheel hub? I figured that if I am going to change me rotors, I would change that hub assembly. I haven't found anything on the web. Any ideas?
Are you talking about the bolts that attach the drive flange to the hub? (there are 6 of them). Is the head of the bolts stripped? then get the bolt-out tool from sears by Craftsman, and replace the bolts before you buy new hub.. or if the thread into the hub are gone, then you may try heli-coil..

The bolts I am referring to come out the actual hub. If you were to take the rotors off, you would take the cap off the hub then unbolt these 6 bolts to take off the outer bearing. It's the first set of bolts you would open. Again, the bolts come out the hub.
