94 pathfinder ticking noise

Hi, I have a 94 pathfinder SE....I get a ticking noise from the engine during the first 1/2 mile of driving....during the first half mile...it seems to fade away. The noise doesn't happen at idle and seems to come back even if I shut the engeine off for a minute or two and restart it...and drive down the road....

anyone else hear of this?

Hear it exactly the same way you do. You may have the infamous cracked exhaust manifold. I've had mine for over a year now and hasn't gotten worse.

Could also be a broken manifold stud. Left alone, eventually it will get worse. Mine has.

so, it isn't anything to do with the engine?....it's just the exhaust? that be just the answer I'm looking for....these seem to be a common problem? Why would it go away after a short distance? Wouldn't an exhaust problem keep on making noise???

I have a 95' with the same noise..It's most likely the infamous Valve Lifter Tick....If there just worn, you have to replace them to make it quit, but try an engine cleaner...Make sure your using the specified 5W30 oil..A thicker oil in the summer may seem more practical and the answer, but it's not...The tiny holes in your engine are drilled for 5W30, not a thicker vescosity...Peace...

So if it's one tick... exhaust issue? several ticks then it would be a valve lifter issue, then? I still haven't confirmed my ticking issue yet. It's only a rapid single tick when accelerating for a very short distance.

what type of engine cleaner would you recommend? I was thinking it was a valve/ lifter issue...but don't know too much about it....any other valve/lifter noise I've heard on other cars I could hear at idle and it wouldn't go away after a short distance like mine does now...I was hopin for the guy who said exhaust manifold cracked or lose to be correct...LOL

if it goes away after the motor warms up, id lean towards exhuast manifold leak.

it comes back when you turn the motor off because the manifold cools down a little. then when you restart it, it has a gap that will close when the manifold heats back up.

check all the studs on the exhuast manifold to see if they are all still there and tight

I'd take it to a shop. It's not easy. If you haven't changed the timing belt yet, you should do it at the same time with the water pump as you'll have to take the same stuff off again if you don't. You'll have to remove the radiator and intercooler so you'll have room to use an air gun to take off the crankshaft pulley, in order to change the timing belt.
