I have a 2005 Pathfinder. Whenever I put my car in reverse to back up, and then I go foward I hear a loud clanking noise coming from either the transmission or the differential. Anyone know if this is normal and or why it does this? Thanks
sometimes I think its coming from the gas tank area. but the rear is most like it. not sure if for me it sounds like area around the transmission. but a clank sound in the rear.

I asked the dealer today when I went in for Service and they said that the clanking noise you hear when you start the car and drive for about 100 feet or less is just the ABS doing a self test. When you do not hear anything, then you need to worry.
the abs self test sounds more like a quick plastic grind. is that what you are hearing? it doesnt sound related to your symptoms...sounds like an easy answer by the dealer.
Mine does the same thing. Sounds kind of like I am running over a metal grate in the road with only one set of wheels. If it does it aftr driving about the same distance, I would say it is probably the ABS. Sounds are hard to diagnose/compare online.

I was driving with the service tech and he knew exactly when it was going to make the noise and he pointed it out. It's only the ABS doing a self test. He said you need to worry if you dont hear it. Thank god everything is ok.
well I got to the point in fact tonight I am going to have them hear the clank noise ijn Mine too! Every morning, I take off and that noise like the car has been sitting on the side of a hill and popping back into shape (that metallic pop). That sound is weird! Does all of these pathfinders do this??
