Hey, just noticed a quiet whining, sound from somewhere in what I assume is one of the pulleys. Kind of like when a bearing is ready to go out, or a water pump is soon to fail? the engine runs quiet at idle, except for this sound, that goes faster as you hit the gas pedal, so its definitely something in the fan belt system.
Anythought? it appears to be on the passenger side near the battery.
the dealership told me it was nothing! They heard it and one of the guys told me it is the EGR valve which is normal. Who knows! Let me know if they find anything different! It sounds like it is the idler pully, but it seems to be coming from the passenger side towards the firewall. I only notice it when it is idling and I am outside the vehicle i see you live in MD, i live in DE!

It's definitely on the passenger side. somewhere near one of the pulleys in the serpentine belt system. Had my son rev the motor and it definitely increased (the sound that is) in pitch and corresponding speed. But its defenitely louder at just an idle. Yep, I'm in Maryland.
Mine has just started doing something that sounds similar. Check out the Frontier boards, they seem to have a lot of problems like this. I am waiting until mine is doing it all the time before I take it in.

has anyone figured out this noise yet? Mine does it all the time and doesn't seem to affect anything. Should we all bring them and make an issue of it?
my Frontier does it too. It's a low volume, kind of a high pitch frequency. I actually think it's somehting motor related. I hear it much less or not at all when windows are down.
Try this: Turn radio off and drive from a stop slowly to speed. If it's like mine it will start getting worse around 2300 rpm's at lower speeds. It will continue doing this as I drive, just tap gas to get it to around 2300 or slightly above. But, to test and see if it's motor or something else while in motion, put in neutral and rev to same rpm's you heard the noise when truck was in drive. If it make's the same exact noise I think it's just a chararestic of the motor. Possibly airbox or some sort of valve???? I'm not really sure.
I'll have soimeone rev it to around 2300 rpm while i'm looking at engine sometime to see if it does it then. Maybe I can pinpoint it.
I have an '05 SE pathfinder and it has this damn noise too! The one time I decided to go to the dealer about it, the noise stopped as I approached the dealership nearest my home. If anyone knows the cause of the noise, please let us all know. Nissan needs to know about this issue as well.
Finally took the car to the dealer to have them do an oil change, fix the spring clip for the gas tank filler door, and to have them fix the noise, they fixed the spring clip, and supposedly changed the fan belt, since then the noise hasn't reappeared.
I've had my belt replaced twice already and am looking at having it replaced
a third time because the noise is back; and I only have 9000 miles. Either
they have a large run of defective belts or there is some design flaw...
