Timing Belt question

HI Guys,

A few of questions of changing timing belt has been bothered me.

1. In FSM , Timing belt section, step 11 :Set No.1 piston at TDC on its compression stroke by rotating crankshaft.

what is the purpose for this step?

2. after step 14, Manual said align punchmark on camshaft sprocket and crankshaft sprocket by temporarily installing crank pulley and rotating crankshaft.

what is the purpose for this step?

what is difference between these two step?
Any input will be appeciated.

1.This aligns all teh reference marks on the gears with the marks on the rear dust cover.

2. the valve train tension causes the cams to rotate slightly when you remove the belt. This allows you to put the cam back in the correct place before installing the new belt.

The dif is the time that you do it...both have to be done, when it says to do them, so don't skip a step.... this is one of those learn by doing things...just follow along and you will be fine.

Don't forget to replace the seals behind the cam gears, the water pump and those two short hoses..... worth its weight in gold later
