Hi I'm new to this site but it was recommended by a friend. I own a 1998 Pathinder SE it has 89K miles on it but i seem to have an issue with the check engine light. My mechanic has reset it 2 times and has run a computer diagnostic test on it. the only error that he can find had something to do with the smog cannister??? He had me replace the gas cap which usually solves the problem. I went about a week without the light coming on. It has since reappeared. When I checked the gas cap again it seems to have worked its way loose.(I know I turned at least 4 clicks). Any other ideas out there on what might be causing this. I would hate to take it to the dreaded dealer!!!!!
Call the mechanic and find out the actual code numbers that triggered the CEL. Unfortunately you're in California, so you can't go get the codes read for free at Autozone like any other state.

what is smog canister? only canister which makes my light on is the evaporation canister sensor at back under car. authorized delaer costs me 300 USD so i removed the lightbulb behind dash. i am happy now may be, not a good solution for US.
