95 Pathfinder won't go in gear

Last night on the way home going 35mph my vehicle started reving all of a sudden. It didn't want to go into the next gear, then the car started getting slower till it wouldn't go. I put it in park and the car would not go in gear. I got out and smelled a really bad rotten egg smell. The car was idling fine.
This morning I checked all my fluid levels and they are full and clean. I take good care of my vehicle. Only issue I have had is that I have had to keep bringing my Pathfinder back to the shop to fix the exhaust leak and keeps coming back. Which it did 2 weeks ago again and haven't had time off work to fix it.

This afternoon, I did try putting it in reverse and the car made this loud reering sound, almost like a belt loose (don't know, never heard it before). It didn't go away until I turned the car off. I started it again and now my car goes into gear.

Any ideas?

Similar thing happened to me last year. Going down the highway and went to speed up and it would a little but revved more than anything. I drove around a bit until its wouldn't do anything but rev. Clutch was gone.
As for the rotten egg smell, I believe it means you catlytic converter.

So since I have an automatic transmission. I need a new transmission? Do you have any idea what this will cost?

Have the tranny checked by a qualified shop (call around). We've had to have ours rebuilt twice - once at around 90,000 miles and then again about 40,000 later. The first time cost about $2,200 and the second time $1,500. (Canadian prices). I checked into a new unit from Nissan and they were about 2,500 at the time.

We're now at around 200,000 miles and still going strong.

Good luck with yours and keep us posted.

The tranny went out on me today. Nissan dealership would only offer 1,000 for trade in, so I kept it. I'm going to pay for a new transmission and find someone to take over the payments. Sucks, I owe 5,600 on it too.

I got the 2006 Nissan Xterra today. $26,000 for it. Hope I can sell my pathfinder soon.

So I had to get my Pathfinder towed to AAMCO.

They wanted to charge me 2,261 to rebuild the transmission
379 for the torque converter
180 for the auxillery cooler!

I towed it home. Going to buy a used transmission for $900 and pay someone to install it. Screw AAMCO!

If you're going to do it properly, do the cooler also as AAMCO was going to do.

Thanks. I will do that. I'm so not looking foward to doing this. Is there by chance a good site to read on replacing this transmission. I got the manual, this may be enough.

I am picking one up from CNS Motors on eBay for mine. $550 +$195 shipping. I just called and spoke to Lee about it. As long as it runs for the next 15,000 miles until I get rid of it, I'll be happy.
