Dam that SES light came on again the other nite.
Engine vibrated and chugging along like it's a gear higher then it should be.
Now running normal since then (Mon. night) I suppose I'll get it checked out, since I'm due for an O,L,F anyway
This is the 5th time it's come on since I've owned the truck in 18K miles. (2001 PF, picked up at 60K in May 2004).
To me, this just doesn't bode well for longetivity of the engine. My interior's good, minimal rust, new shocks/struts, just put brand new Dueler Revo's on....but this SES thing is really getting to me. It's been at least $200 a pop (fuel injectors, ignition coil, cam timing sensor, and something else). I never had it come on in my 97 PF that I had for a year and a half, and sold it to my dad--whos had it come on once (sensor) in 2 years. Never had any engine problems in my 94 Hardbody which I had for 8 years.
It's making me want to buy a new car with a warranty...
Agreed. The SES light on my '01 is on more than its off. I purchased this vehicle based on its high reliability ratings. Those were clearly untrue.
Now I can't wait to replace it with something more reliable and less costly to fix. $1000 for a set of coils is a bit stupid! The coil for my Cherokee was $69.00.... Never buy a Nissan product again! Anyone considering purchase of one should be wary...
Likewise my CEL is on about half the time. Best thing to ever happen for repair shops I think. My opinion is a secret conspiracy occured when the EPA or whoever started all this OBDII stuff. Engines were needing less repair and lasting longer, EFI (no more distributor points or timing), plugs that last 100K miles. Repair shops where like Hey we're diein' here! Can't we put a light on the dashboard to force people to get their car fixed?! My personal opinion.
It was another Ignition Coil failure.....the second one in less than a year- #5, replaced #1 last time.
I was informed Nissan has replaced the old coil part # with a new part #, so they wanted to sell me the whole 6 coil set at $1000. One goes for $300 installed.
No guarantee that the new one "communicates" with the old ones
so it may come on again tomorrow.
This was my dream car, but I just can't deal with the continuing engine issues. I'm parking it until I can sell it, that's the last straw.
Noticing you all having the 01 - I was curious and found this ... looks like it was 01/02 that the engines had problems such as yours. Sucks to hear that your dream car was not, i hope you find something you like!

Likewise, my QX4 is on the block... I can't even think about the liabilities this thing presents. I loved it, and I paid too much for it. I'll likely take a kicking, but I've certainly learned my lesson.
Too bad Nissan won't own up to some responsibility here.
After just buying my first Nissan, Im hoping this was just a contained issue within the 01/02 models? I find this interesting as well, as those were the last years of that model, usually those are the most reliable!

Starting in 2001 thru 2004, Nissan used the 3.5L VQ engine from the Maxima, tweaked for the truck. The engine wasn't new, but the application was.
You'd think the VQ wouldn't have all these issues, since it had been in the Maxima for a while (how long, I don't know, I'm not up on that history). But it seems to be well documented from what I'm reading on various forums-- O2 sensors, coil failures, timing sensors--- are failing pretty high on this generation Pathfinder.
Course, I didn't find all that info till after it started happening to me personally, and I researched it.
The venerable 3.3 VG had it's own issues-- exhaust manifold being one, but that was covered under an extended Nissan warranty up to 10 yrs/100K if you were lucky. My 97 had it happen.
I have the SES light on since 1.5 years. Got the truck new in 2001. Light came on at 62000 miles.. now I am at 74K miles. My code reader says its the second O2 $ensors on both banks, and intake timining control $ensor... does the light really go away after all these fixes? or i need to get the ECU reprogrammed by Nissan?? thats what my friend with 2003 nissan maxima did.

my lite goes off after each repair....till it comes on the next time for a different problem. I don't think the techs have the ECU reprogrammed each time, but I'm sure that the ECU reads the problem as corrected...
I would think you're hurting your mpg by running with faulty sensors for 12K miles (if I'm reading your post right).
Replaced the intake valve timing position sensor, and now code 1140 went away.. still got O2 sensor code.. the sensor 1 in each back is used for fuel calculations. The sensor 2 (post cat converter) in each bank is only used for high performance applications.. like drag racing.. my mpg have not changed with the second O2 sensors not working..
Threads like this get me down a bit... I bought my 01 SE about 2 months ago and while the mileage does suck the truck is great. The light turned on the other day and it was the CAT. Took it to Nissan and they reprogrammed the ECU for me (free of course). 3 weeks later and still golden. Let's see what happens. I'm hoping this was just an isolated batch of 01's. I hate the ECU and will sale and take a lost if its too stubborn. This is why I sold my last card, light never came off on a (98 Accord).
Can I ask the dates your respective SUV's where built, I would love to see if there is a common denominator to this.
It gets me down too. I just about lost it when I bought it 2 yrs ago and couldn't get the vibration problem fixed, then it started with the lite.
My build date 2/00
almost 2 months later no light return, thank god. I know it's only a matter of time, tho. 4 coils left to go, then there's always the O2 sensors.
I suppose I have a masochistic streak...I got so pissed off, I went ahead and paid the thing off with all intentions to sell. Listed it on craig's list. got a few bites, but decided to keep it.
I'd just cost me more to sell and buy a new car than just keep fixing this is it comes. I am however seriously considering creating a stockpile of sensors, coils, etc. for the inevitable.
