battery cable

hi guys, just wondering if anyone could help me out. i am having problems starting the my pathy. the engine doesn't click over at all. i got stuck like 30 miles away from my house. luckily i wonderful man stopped and jumped it. however, the suv didn't start even after the jump. the man said it wasn't the battery. perhaps the starter. so i called a tow truck. about 5 minutes after i called the tow truck, i tried to start it and it started. i was thankful for that. the next day i had my son check it. he's not really a mechanic. but he noticed that the battery post was full of the white fluffy stuff. and again the the pathy will not start. he cleaned the battery post and the end of the battery cable and put the anti-corrosion on it and it still wouldn't start. my son said that i probably need to chance the whole cable but he's not sure. guys please help. i really need my car to get to work. i will have to take the bus for 2 hours to get to work til this thing gets fixed. i am woman and don't no anything about cars. my pathfinder is a 1997 v6 with 3.3L and it's the safari edition. it has 152k miles on it. it's still the original battery cables so i was thinking it was time to change it, if it's the problem. i also check auto zone and murrays and they do not carry the cable. is there any place i can get the cable cheaper instead of going to the dealer?pls. help guys. thanks.

You should ask your son to install his car battery into your Pathfinder. If it won't start, then I would assume it's the starter. With all the corrosion, the battery probably wasn't charging up the way it should. If it's still the same battery Nissan provided, then it may be a good time to change.

I don't think you need to change the entire cable, you could just change the terminals. To change the terminals all you'd really need is maybe a hack saw, a box cutter and a couple of 9/16 (maybe) wrenches to change it.

hi, thanks for the input. i decided to change the negative cable since i was told by one of my co-workers that it's usually the 1st one that goes out. after changing it nothing really changed. the suv still doesnt start. my co-worker told me to have my son go underneath the car and tap the starter with a hammer a couple of times. he did that and the suv started. i guess the starter was going bad. my son also said that the positive battery cable looked kind of like greenish, i was thinking since i change the negative cable might as well change the positive cable as well. now, for the starter, how much roughly am i going to spend for this part? should i try the dealer or should i try the local murray or auto zone? pls. help me out. thank you very much.

Don't bother with taking it to the dealer, unless you like giving away money to the unneedy. It'd be a lot cheaper if you're sone is willing and able to replace the starter. If not, it may run you bout $200 - $300 at a independent shop, depending on how much work is needed. I've heard the first generation Pathfinders need to have the passenger tire removed... don't know bout the second gen like yours. But that's not a big deal.

I'm sure you'll be driving it again before the end of the week.

Those starters are easy to do. Takes about 45 minutes on the ground to do. Takes me barely 20 minutes with a lift

hi guys, yesssssss! my son was able to take out the starter and replaced it. since he's not really mechanically inclined, he had a little bit of a hard time taking it out according to him. he said it felt very rewarding that he was able to start the suv. i guess it wasnt the battery cable after all. now i have to return the favor by buying him a new pair of gym shoes. he's been bugging me about it and i told him that if fixed my suv i will reward him. and rewarded i did. thanks guys for all the help.
