Question 88 pathfinder 4x4 problem

hi,my 88 pathfinder 5 speed manuel ,the lever is stuck in 4L but this is not my problem because i only remove snow with it, this morning the 4x4 was not engaging when going forward but was engaging sometimes in reverse, when it was not i had to put the brakes, push the clucht and release eveything slowly so that the wheels would turn slowly and after a couple of toc toc it would engage, 4 hours later i tried it again it it seems to be ok .
what do you think it is ?

Must be the auto hubs, which should never disengage if the transfer is stuck in 4L. I suggest replacing them with manual hubs for what you are using it for.

I haven't done this, but I have removed and reinstalled my auto hubs, so I'd have to say it isn't difficult. Most Pathy owners that have made the switch recommend Warn Premium Hubs. A set runs a little under $200.
