95 Pathfinder negative battery cable

Hello, Can anyone tell me the proper name for the negative battery cable on a 95 Pathfinder 4wd? My has corroded and broken at the clamp. I need to replace the whole thing. I called Autozone and they sold me one which is definitely NOT the cable I need. It was a cable yes, but no ground and was like 20" too short. I tried calling the dealer but parts guy was a total a**hole. Is it also known as an earth cable? Basically I'd like to order this part, and to start I think I should call it what it is! Is negative battery cable sufficient? Thanks.

"Negative Battery Cable", correct term or not, is certainly as much information as any parts guy worth half his wait in salt, should require. The term "lead" is also sometimes used for "cable", but that shouldn't make a difference to a parts guy.

It's too bad that the Nissan dealer was such a jerk. Do you have another dealership to go to, or are there other guys (or gals) at the dealer that might be more helpful? Fortunately, my city has 2 Nissan dealerships and both have excellent parts staff - - except that their parts are usually too expensive.

Just a thought, are you sure you need to replace your entire cable? Your local parts store should have after-market battery terminal clamps that you just clamp the cable into. Maybe you could just clean up the remaining cable, strip the ends and use one of these clamps.

Anyway, good luck with your search and let us know how it turns out.

Thanks for the reply Zilverado!, Replacing the clamp only is an excellent idea. I didnt know that those parts were available. It is only the clamp thats gone bad. It cracked because it got so corroded. Is there any danger involved in cutting and stripping the end of existing the negative cable? Like a shock or something? Thanks man.

Only if you leave the positive (+) cable attached.

Seriously though, you do want to make sure you disconnect the positive cable. Otherwise, you could get a little current flowing where you don't want it. This is only 12 volts, so you wouldn't get a serious shock, but the amount of amps in the battery is sufficient to spark up pretty good, even spot-weld a misplaced screwdriver to a bracket...

Good luck with the fix.
