I recently Bought a 87 2.4L TBI Pathy from a friend. It has been sitting for over 6 months and it ran fine when parked. When I got it I drained the gas out and replaced with fresh gas ( old gas was bad, Dark orange). Problem is that I cannot get it to start, motor turns over fine but will not fire. I have checked the following: It does have spark, is getting gas, Battery is charged, and replaced fuel filter. It Will start and run for a few seconds if you shoot starting fluid in the TB. Not sure what else to check. Any Sugestions?
Are you sure it's getting enough gas? Is the fuel pump providing enough pressure?
If the engine starts with a shot of starter fluid, and then dies, I would still suspect a fuel delivery problem. Or possibly, there is still old "bad" gas in the system that needs to be purged.
I agree with you, I think it has to do with fuel to. Not sure about the pressure yet , I don't have a pressure tester yet. Going to pick one up later tonight. I'm pretty sure I got all of the old gas out, I even took the fuel line off to make sure it was clean gas coming out. I'm just wondering if the injectors is even shooting gas. I guess I will check this stuff out tomorrow. I will post the results.
Gas doesn't normally turn dark orange from being old. I suspect what you see is rust. The new fuel filter may be clogged, depending on the amount of particles suspended in the gas; replacing it may fix the problem (I'd plan on replacing it several times with in a fairly short period of time). Rust may also be in the fuel pump sock, preventing the pump from delivering enough fuel. Worst case, the rust may have made it's way to the injectors. If so, you may want to have them professionally cleaned (should be cheaper than replacements).

Life is too short to take it too seriously
Well, did some more checking, fuel pressure is strong and up to specs. Check computer code it is throwing up a code 43, which is , Injector circuit open. I followed all testing procedures according to AllData.com. Everything checked out: has good power source to injectors, has good ground circuit, even checked the input/output signal to the E.C.U which was good. I tested the main relay, safety relay, and the fuel pump relay, all were good. I cranked the engine over several time and then took 2 plugs out, which they were still dry, So the injectors are NOT firing otherwise they should have gas on them right? This is driving me nuts. I'm going to go buy a noid light tomorrow to check to see if the injectors are receiving signal, which I don't think they are. Could one or both injectors still be bad, even after all tests show good? Are there any other sensors the signal goes though before the ECU sends a signal to the injectors? Maybe the computer bad? I hate to spend that much just to find out it wasn't, That will be my last resort. Anybody have any other ideas?
