'91 gas and temp guage inop

Hey guys I 'm new here and in need of help. I just bought a '91 pathfinder to play with. I'm in the process of rebuilding it. But I just can't seem to get the gas and temp guage to work.. I was told the cluster at 1st. Tried that and they are still inop. Heard this was a very common problem, but no one can tell me how to fix it. Any help would be appreciated. Thanx!

Thanks for the info toddf. The day after I posted the thread, my regulator came in from nissan. I installed it that night and it worked perfectly. I'll be saving your solution for future reference. Thanks again!
