98 Pathfinder Won't Crank

A few days ago, I was driving, and suddenly my spedometer and tachometer dropped to zero - no other problems. I stopped for gas, and when I got back into my 'finder, nothing happened when I tried to start.

Radio, dome lights, fans, and headlights are all full and bright. After a few tries, it started up (starts fine when it cranks)...and all was well for a few days.

Tonight, it happened again, I stopped, and it took about 30 minutes for it to start up again. No other problems, everything runs great when it starts.

I did clean the battery terminals and cables really well...but it seemed to have no effect....anyone have any thoughts about what it could be?

I'm hoping it's a not too expensive solution (i.e. no $800 computer replacement)

thanks, in advance!

With the gauges going dead it sounds like a wire / connections issue, but the part about waiting 30 minutes has me stumped. Intermittent problems are a usually bear though. Even after you fix it, you're usually never quite sure if you did.
When you fist turn the key on, do the lights on the dash come on? Any other observations might help.

Did the gauges return to normal after getting it started? Did the gauges do the same thing the second time? If the gauges are working normaly and not acting up around the same time then maybe it was just a fluke (sort of).

What year model? Manual or automatic? What is your local climate like?
