Hi,
So this weekend as I was driving my '91 Pathfinder, the power steering suddenly stopped working. I checked the fluid level and it seemed to be okay (maybe a little low but not much), but seeing how it was a sudden occurance, I'm inclined to think a leak isn't the problem. I don't really know anything about power steering systems so I have no idea what the problem could be. Anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Is the belt slipping? Broken? Did you drive thru a puddle or suffer a major oil leak? If the system is intact My guess is the pump failed internally or your belt isnt doing its job... can you remove the return line have someone start the truck and see if its pumping?

Well I guess I'm inclined to believe that it's the pump that's failed, as nothing happened to make the belt start slipping. So the next question I should ask is if it's bad for the vehicle to drive it consistently without the power steering? I may end up leaving it for a while because its pretty inconvenient for me to take it in to get repaired. Thanks for your input.
OK, in case anyone was wondering or if anyone has a similar problem sometime, I took a look at this last weekend and found the problem was that the power steering belt broke. The reason I didn't find this earlier was because it has a separate belt for the power steering, which I have never seen before in my limited experience, even if it's not uncommon. Since I don't have a garage and it's -20 Celsius out, I'm gonna have Canadian Tire replace it, it shouldn't take more than 30 minutes, but we'll see what they end up charging me.
Oh yeah, I remember that when I inspected the broken belt (when I found it), it looked like it had twisted sometime before breaking, so that it was riding on the side of the belt maybe. I don't know how else to explain it. Does anyone know what the problem there might be, or is it common?

Glad you found the problem. Could be the thrust on the pump shaft is out of wack which means a new pump. Could just be the way the belt wore maybe it was defective....you will know soon enough when you get the new one.
