Backup lights?

Does anyone have experience with the backup light system on a 95 Pathfinder with a manual transmission? My backup lights are out and I thought it was the switch, but after getting the new switch installed (not easy) I still don't have lights. I'm going to bring home a meter from work this week to troubleshoot it, but I thought I would post to see if anyone has already gone through this.

Thanks,
Jim

Thanks for the reply,

Yes, I checked for a blown fuse, I didn't see a specific fuse for the BU lights, and all the other circuits are working fine. I did notice some oil in the connector for the switch, it might have run down the wire?? I tried cleaning it out with WD-40, I'm going to check into it with a meter tomorrow as well as checking the functionality of the switch when the shifter is moved to R.

Thanks again,
Jim

You do have the key on, right? According to the '94 FSM, BU lamps are on the same 10A fuse as A/C, rear window defog, ECM, and a slew of other miscellaneous accessories. You'd probably notice if it was blown.
With the key on, you should have +12v on the W/B wire of the switch. With the trans in reverse, you should also have +12v on the R/B wire. From the switch, the R/B runs up to a connector on the passenger (right) side front fender, to a connector on the rear left, then to the lamp sockets. Also check the black wire on the lamps for ground.

Thanks so much for the useful information! I am going to start by making sure the switch is activating when the shifter is in R, then I'll use information you provided to trace back the +12.

I'm going to troubleshoot it tomorrow night, wish me luck, it's such a pain to get to!

Thanks again,
Jim

I checked tonight and the new switch is not activating, it's open the whole time. Does anyone know if the linkage is somehow adjustable to make it engage the switch more?

Thanks,
Jim

Nope. The reverse switch you installed should be the one on the tranny case, right? Check the wiring...

Yes, I replaced the correct switch. I've done some more testing and I'm pretty sure the switch isn't closing, If I check the resistance across the switch with the tranny in R it shows infinite ohms. If there is indeed no adjustment to the linkage, I guess I will have to add a auxilary switch and turn the BU lights on manually.

Thanks for all your help.
