Jumpy temp gauge

I think I see a new thread every week about problems with the automatic tranny on older pathies.
Anywho, I got my aux tranny cooler on, inline filter, and just put in a temp gauge for the tranny fluid. The gauge gives me a good read except when I jump on the gas the needle will top out for a moment, then jump around, and finally it will settle back at a constant temp. Could you help me fix this jumpy gauge? Bad ground? I have it grounded just below the drivers side dash, could it be picking up some feedback from the throttle? Thanks and by the way, the temp has been topping out at 180 F with stop and go driving around town. I think the aux. cooler is working!

Sounds more like the wire to the sender is being pulled or shorting on the frame when the engine torques. And some variation may actually be the fluid temperature as it is heated in the trans and passes by the sensor.

Thanks for the input. The sender unit wire is new and I wrapped it in plastic spiral loom (is that what it is called?) from the tranny to the firewall. I will check out the connection at the tranny later when pathy comes home.

I would also expect the temp to fluctuate a bit but it jumps from 170 to 280 in less than a second. (Fahrenheit) Thanks again.
