rattle/grinding sound

I have a 2001 pathy SE. Now under hard acceleration i can hear a grinding or rattling sound. It also happens when im in neutral and I rev my engine. It happens at RPM's above 2k. It is definitely coming from the engine bay i believe. Engine light isn't on so I dont know what it could be.

i checked under my car and i am missing 2 or 3 screws from the skidplate. It doesnt move when i try to move it with my hands at all though. I hope this is the cause of the sound.

If that doesn't fix it and the sound resembles marbles rolling around in a bucket, it could be the water pump, even though it seems a bit premature for a 2001.

i'm pretty positive it is the water pump now that you mention it. Its a breif sound under acceleration depending on how hard it is. But it does sound like marbles in a metal bucket. I hope this isn't too expensive to fix now.
how serious of a problem is this for the engine?

If it is the pump, I wouldn't wait for it to comletely go. Worst case the shaft could snap and ruin the radiator - believe me I know.
The part isn't cheap, but it's not too bad. The labor is what I consider unreasonable. It isn't a difficult job, just time consuming. If you are about due for a timing belt, your in luck as the additional labor for the pump should be almost nothing.
