Once your transmission started acting up, how long did it continue to run?
Six months? Year? One week?
My son just bought a 90 pathfinder that kicks down to (what seems like) neutral at freeway speeds. We're taking the advice of 88pathoffroad and will add a cooler and change the fluid, but do you think it'll make it from Santa Cruz, CA to San Diego and back? The kid really worked hard to save up for his dream of a pathfinder trip on the day of his license. Hate to see him miss it, but safety's first.

My guess would be not too long, those trannys are supposed to be really shitty. Plus if its a 90 with an orig tranny - I would not trust it - how many miles?

Agreed, his dream trip could turn into a "roadside" nightmare

They're not "really shitty", they simply have a problem related to overheating which causes failure of internal parts, just like any other auto tranny. The main problem is the stock fluid cooler, which tends to clog up and overheat the tranny. How is that the tranny's fault?
I'd say that if it's still driving OK most of the time (you say 95%), it'd be OK to take a trip with as long as you take it easy and don't try to break land speed records.
