How long did you drive on a bad tranny?[ oops duplicate post]

Once your transmission started acting up, how long did it continue to run?
Six months? Year? One week?
We have a 90 pathfinder that kicks down to (what seems like) neutral at freeway speeds. We're taking the advice of 88pathoffroad and will add a cooler and change the fluid, but do you think it'll make it from Santa Cruz, CA to San Diego and back? The kid really worked hard to save up to make his dream of a pathfinder trip on the day of his license. Hate to see him miss it.
