There's a reason it's supposed to be replaced every time. It's called a crush washer because it deforms to the shape of the oilpan and the plug itself when tightened. After removing it, it'll be deformed and should be replaced unless you want your oilpan to leak in your driveway...

I installed a Fumoto valve for draining oil. No crush washer I just drain into an old 5 quart jug.

and it doesn't extend below the skid plate.

I see this question frequently on the boards. Am I the only one who finds it strange that an owner would drop $30,000 on a vehicle then balk at spending an additional $0.59 per oil change? You'll probably get some replies that say that you can re-use the washer, and that is true. The problem, however, is that in order to get the bolt to seal properly you'll have to tighten it more than spec. Do that a couple of times and you run the very real risk of stripping it out. Fixable, but expensive and a pain in the rear. Do yourself a favor--with every oil change use a new crush washer ($5.90 for a 10-pack) and use a torque wrench when tightening the drain bolt.

I wanted to get a fumoto for my 2005 Frontier and didn't know how far it would protrude down. Now I do. Thanks for the picture. I ordered it today.

I like that Fumoto valve idea. It looks like it would work well.
by the way, which part number would it be?
I guess the price range is around the $20 - $25.

I ordered the F103 based on the fit info they provided. Hopefully it's correct. I should know in a few days. Supposedly it shipped yesterday.
