Question transmission problem!?!?!?

hi,
i have a 97 nissan pathfinder se recently it started shifting funny. now it wont shift from 2nd to 3rd it just starts going into high rpm. i took it to a nissan dealer and they told me i needed an all around new transmission which will cost me about $3000 for a new one. which being a college student is the kind of money i dont have. so my question to everyone is, going with a rebuilt or used tranny a good choice? , How much do they normally run? , And does anyone know where i might look to find one? Thanks.

It may be to late to change the fluid, how many miles on your pathfinder and did you ever change the tranny fluid?

Money, Money, Money

A used or rebuilt trany could cost you anywhere from $600-$1300. Are you planning on swapping it out yourself? If not, maybe the person swapping it will know the best place to find a good replacement. I looked online and found several sites that will e-mail you a quote. If a rebuild shop dyno tests the trany before shipping, you are sure to get a working rebuild. There is always a chance of something going wrong with a used or rebuilt trany.

Have you considered seeing how much it would be if you took your tranny out and gave it to someone to rebuild. It may be cheaper if the parts that need to be replaced don't add up to too much (clutch and band rebuild kit?). You may be able to find a local trany mechanic that will rebuild it for a couple hundred plus parts. It would be nice to open your trany and only find that you need $100 worth of parts, but then again, you never know, the parts that you need could add up to $1200 or more!
