ATF Flushed (foamy)

Just changed fluid and filter with Mobil 1 Synthetic. I flushed teh system as well using a long hose attatched to teh return line from the cooler.

Man oh man it looked like Guinness at first. All dark and foamy. I pumped out 5 Qts and filled same amount at roughly same time. Went until it came out bright pink and stopped. Checked levels. Everything is fine now and added a Trans cooler for added prtection.

Wonderd why the old ATF pumped out was foamy. Any ideas?

Automatics have filters in them also, so the pan should be dropped adn that filter replaced.

Dark fluid is not a good sign it useally means burned bands and the foam is from over heating. so you might think your problem is fixed but I bet the fix wont last long.

Keep an eye on it and see if the color starts changing again. 5 Qts is nothing, all that will do is become contaminated with the remaining 7+ Qts that still remained.

Automatics have many passages internally, take that and add the fluid in the pan plus the torque converter and your looking at about 12+ qts.

I dropped the pan and changed the filter first. Then refilled with 4Qts Mobil1 syn.

then I flushed the remaining 4+qts with the return line while engine was running. I refilled at the same rate with same amount that came out.
It was only foamy for the first few secnonds comming through the line. It wasnt like that at the pan.

My vehicle holds just under 9qts from empty according to Nissan.

ATF foams up when the level is low and the pump cavitates it inside the torque converter.
