Failling smog test...help

My name is Pete and I own a 1990 Pathfinder XE with 209K on the original VG30E that has never seen a rebuild. I have done all the routine maintenance since 1993. This is the first year I have failed smog at the 2500 rpm test. At idle, the truck passes. I am thinking that the O2 sensor and cat might be gone and I was going to replace them, but I wanted to check out the forums and find out if there might be some more help. I also have minor nuances like the temp guage is slow and the fuel guage will not read full when I fill up, hard shifting with a brand new transmission from Nissan. Well these are a few issues. Thanks for taking the time and reading.

Pete

I ould bring the truck to nissan and have them adjust the shift points in the tranny. if they cant then get them to explain why it shifts bad and what they plan to do about it. Always put the solution on them.

Have them sniff the tail pipe while hooked to the diagnostic computer and if you are having a problem with o2 or cat it will show up on the diagnostic computer.

One thought - if the engine isnt heating up to operating temp it will stay in the closed loop sytem mode and run rich ie failing the test. are you sure the vehicle is warming properly?

A trick i learned from friend when i lived in ca is to remove your aircleaner for the test. It wont be obvious to the tester and that little more air into the cumbustion can get you over the line at times. Dont run your truck for more than a few minutes without a filter.... thats Bad news.

Poor planning on your part does not constitute an emergency on my part........

A fresh oil change could make the difference of passing and failing. I always have a fresh oil change when I take my Maxima (200k now) through inspection.

Your gauge problem sounds like a bad voltage regulator (behind the dash), which would have nothing to do with the emissions. Which emissions were bad; HC, NOx, CO?
In general, a clean air filter and cleaning the MAF sensor helps.

Life is too short to take it too seriously
