UK review of Pathfinder diesel

Nissan Pathfinder
2.5 dCi S 4x4 5 dr, £24000

Slotting in above the X-Trail Nissan hopes this new Pathfinder can replicate the success of its smaller relative against rivals like the Toyota Land Cruiser, Mitsubishi Shogun, Volvo XC90 and Land Rover Discovery. With its flexible seven-seat interior, smart, chunky looks, decent off-road performance and 3 tonne towing ability it's certainly got the basics right to compete in this class. Add in decent pricing and generous specifications and its appeal increases even further. All but the single entry-level S model come with fold-flat third row seats, the middle row also able to be stowed flat to increase maximum luggage space when needed. Overall, it's a well thought out interior, with useful cubby storage, easy to use flexible seating and a smart uncomplicated style.
It's not just inside that the Pathfinder impresses, as it's an easy, enjoyable drive, too. The 2.5-litre turbodiesel feels either sprightly enough, or slightly overwhelmed depending on your transmission choice, the automatic robbing it of performance and refinement. It's best to opt for the manual then, which although long in throw, is accurate and lets you better tap into the turbodiesel's low rev torque. What's surprising is how enjoyable it is to drive, the steering offering an unusual amount of feel and feedback for a big 4x4. The Pathfinder's body control also composed, resisting roll well in the corners, only rough surfaces upset its otherwise impressive composure. All feature an equipment lists that includes climate control, ESP, a CD player, driver, front passenger side and curtain airbags and Nissan's easy to operate ALL-MODE four-wheel-drive system. A capable, enjoyable drive, that's good value, practical and well specified, the Pathfinder impresses on every level and is sure to win customers who simply cannot justify the additional cost of a Discovery when a Pathfinder does everything it can do for a good deal less.

RATING:

( + ) Pricing, space, practicality, equipment, decent drive

( - ) Fussy automatic, lack of prestige badge

Cool and 31mpg...

I hope manufacturers start marketing more diesel options in the US now that gas prices are rising. The Jeep Liberty is available now with a pretty stout diesel.
