it looks like we got tons of people on this board who know a bit about how dealerships work, etc etc. can everyone list stuff they know about dealerships and how to talk through the salesmen into getting the best deals? i've always wanted to buy those books which claim to give you inside information into how to buy a new car for almost factory price, but i'm not buying a car anytime soon. but i think listing some tips and info here will still be interesting and helpful to others. i started this threat cuz i saw this in another thread:

Those finance people that you talk to when you are purchasing a car make money off of your interest rate. I didn't know this till I worked at a dealer. If they tell you that you will get approved for your car loan at, say, 11%, the truth is, is that you probably got approved for 9% and those people in the finance department at that dealer put that extra 2% in their pocket each month. Add that up and to the unknowning customer is scammed out of a quite a bit of money. ALWAYS go through your bank for a loan.
Research is the best way to get a good deal. Find out what the invoice price is on the car you want plus any options. Then use that as your base for when you talk price. Also, it's usually better to go with financing other than through the dealership. And, of course, if you can buy the car out-right, then that's the best thing you can do. But being knowledgable about the car you want is your best weapon. Also, decide what the most you're willing to pay is, and if the salesperson won't meet your price, then walk. A salesperson would rather make a smaller commission, then no sale at all. Oh, and you can always do what I did and find a friend who works at a dealership and buy it from him. Then you can get hooked up with the "family/friend" price. Which basically means they'll only make like $100 off of your sale.

An interesting note, those of you who are ambitious and plan to one day pay cash for a new car, (or who already can), do not just buy it outright. They will give you a better deal if they think they are going to make money off the financing. Take their financing, get the deal, then pay it all off in the first month or two. Then be sure to buy your next car someplace else.

i had this book called "beat a car salesman" it's small and easy to read, but it's helpful.
it was like $5. i suggest you get one- it was very helpful. i went with my mom when she bought her 02 sentra and well, I beat the car salesman;-)
if u want me to summarize some of the stuff, let me know, but it's better to read the whole thing 'cos it makes a lot of points on how the system works and shit.
