I think you guys are examining this article too closely. I didn't read anywhere in the article where it states that "if they have strut brace, they are street racing". It says that they MIGHT be. When I read it, I looked at this as a wake up call to naive parents who really are clueless to their childrens adventures.
While grossly over done, lets not forget that most people in their 40's and up don't know much about auto-tuning today. This is the generation who saw speed as a huge carb poking through the hood and 3ft wide tires at the rear. It's easy for us to condemn the article as a joke, but i'm sure that many, many parents would read this and see things in a whole new light.
NOW...that being said. I agree with Mike ( I think it was Mike) who said that if parents were doing their jobs, they would know where their children are spending the money.
Guess my point was that we, as "living the life", can find it really easy to look to hard into this.

I think that if kids are raised right then they'd know enough not to engage in activities like that. My parents knew I spent money on my car but they also knew that I was responsible enough not to engage in stupid activity and thats why they never stopped letting me do what I wanted with the car. This article really just makes parents more aware of what their kids might be doing, but the simplest thing a parent can do is just ask their child.
my mom knows why i want a fast car. and shes ok with it, im not going to be street racing, its stupid, but i am going to pursue drag and drift. oh, and the auto tag thing is fun, we used to do it in open fields, but never more than 30mph, and the tags were usually at 5

I've had all kinds of stuff done to my car for a good while now...wheels, exhaust, drop, c/f hood, strut brace, etc. I never reported any of these modifications to Geico. When ever a tree fell on my c/f hood and ruined it, they came out appraised it and wrote a check. The lady did say that these modifications should be reported, but she didn't hesitate to cover it.
The gay thing is, you're gonna report your modifications, then they're gonna start throwing words together and before you know it your premium is doubled cause they come to some stupid conclusions about what exactly you use your car for.

Unfortunatly, there are plenty of mental midgets out there that do modify their cars and the wreck them.
Enough to justify raising everyones rates?? Who knows.

I agree and yet disagree.
I completely agree that the article is targetting naive parents about the activities their children might be engaging in. Just recently, I got into a huge arguement with a friend's sister over this. She had just turned 17 and wanted her brother's 2nd gen Rex. Her father knew that the rex came turboed but had no clue that his son upgraded that and the suspension strictly for drifting. I can't recall how many times he had asked why his son was going through so many tires a month and me- being loyal to a friend- always has to lie for him, saying how he hit potholes, etc etc. When the car was passed on to the daughter after the son went to college, I decided it something I had to inform them about since their daughter shouldn't have that as her first car. To put it frankly, neither parents had no idea of the dangers that were involved when putting a new driver behind the wheel of that car.
While I don't completely agree with Geico's possibility of raising premiums of modified cars, I can't really blame them either. Look at how easy it is for kids to get cars in the 300+ HP range. While some may be able to handle such cars, the vast majority of new drivers, are completely oblivious to the necessary skills that are required.
I think the main difference between this generation and those who are 40+, as far as tuning goes, is that the current generation has it a bit easier. Before, you actually had to learn how to get everything working properly to have a fast car. Much of it was trial and error. Nowadays, all of that information is readily available on the net or on discs that provide accurate data. If you want a properly sized turbo, just go online, punch much HP you're looking to obtain and bam- instant satsifaction. The resources are just more readily available unlike previous generations who had to actually calculate everything.
When all is said and done, its the bad apples that ruin it for everyone. If I could have my way, before anyone could drive, they'd have to go to a driving school. Not these crappy DMV driving courses or HS education classes, schools like professional drivers use. Sure it would cost an arm and a leg, but the results are well worth the money.
Now I'm just waiting for the day when its illegal to modify a car due to the antics of reckless idiots (of all ages I might add) who believe they are 'invincible'.

1. If your son/daughter blows up his/her engine on the way to the mall.
2. If your son/daughter wraps his/her brand new (insert name of $40,000+ car here) around a (tree, telephone poll, house, etc)
3. If your son/daughter is burning through a tank of gas every 48 hours.
4. If the hood of the car is dented (from the inside)
5. If their exhaust is audible from 3+ blocks away
6. If their car is fast and they seem to have gained mass amounts of money.
7. If their car is slow and tasteless and they seem to have lost mass amounts of money.
yeah, i always go to autozone and get my parts, because my aunt works there, and i get the stuff super cheap.
