Question for my Canadian Cousins

I am curious about surfing the net in Canada. I have a client interested in having a Canadian website because there product is going to be sold there. Do most of the website you go to, are they .com's or .ca's? If you type in a google search do your get the .com version of websites or the .ca version. Case in point Ford.com, they also have a Ford.ca, so when you are looking for Fords website do your search results com back .com or .ca? I need to know the impotarnce of having specifically a stricktly Canadian website or if the .com site they have is good ebough for America and Canada. Plus how important is it to have a French and English version?

Any help you guys can give me on this subject will be appreciated.

ive been to canada, and seen the web browser, most stuff comes back as a .com, only specific things for canada come back as .ca, such as a canada only store, or the govenment is like .gov.ca

It depends, actually. If it's a larger multinational company, a Canadian site is good because they typically use Canadian currency, and you can assume that shipping prices are going to be for Canadians. A difficult thing that happens when buying things off of American websites is that it's always in US$ and they jack the shipping costs... so anything Canadian-specific is nice. For smaller companies, I guess it just depends.

When I google "Ford", the Canadian site is about the 6th hit I get, but it is the one I'd go to if I were looking at Fords.

I guess I'd reccommend having a .ca website if you're selling stuff online to Canadians. I personally avoid .com websites when buying stuff online, because of the US$ and shipping differences, it's just a hassle. If I type in "ebay.com", it automatically goes to ebay.ca, which is perfect. That's just me though.

Why not use both? Hoser.com & Hoser.ca...or would that be too expensive?

You have to have to be a Canadian resident or a company working under Candian law to even get a .ca. So we would need the company to open a Canadian division.

Wait, I would do that for you Hal, but i'm in the process of giving a quote to a company who wants a Canadian web-page. Something about animals or something.
