I took a music test; the info we were to review was on short notice and the songs were long european and latin names. I simply could not remember them and definately not spell them correctly. I wrote them down a piece of paper that I had during the test. It was not a good idea and I realize this. Today I got this email; it was sent to the entire class.

MUSC 100 Class,
It has been brought to my attention by more than one student in the class that there has been cheating on this quiz, and potentially others.
I have been in discussion with the Music department regarding this, and will be seeking the names of those who have been academically dishonest on this quiz. Please be aware that is strictly forbidden to violate the academic honesty policies set forth by UMBC, and those students in violation will receive any penalties deemed appropriate by the University.
It is indeed very sad that there are those students who take advantage of the size of our class and the seating arrangement to gain an unfair advantage over those who have attended the classes and studied honestly for the tests or exams. It is highly likely that Quiz #4 will be re-written and readministered to the entire class to ensure a level playing field.
We will now have Proctors present at ALL remaining tests, and will utilize the stage with chairs to ensure that there is ample separation between students during testing.
It is a shame that such measures must be taken, but obviously it is necessary. Furthermore, my own reputation as a faculty member at UMBC is now in question because of this incident.
If you have a suspicion of a student cheating, I urge you to contact me confidentially to discuss it further. I cannot substantiate these claims unless I have several witnesses.
For those of you who have cheated, I assure you that I will do everything to find out who you are. There are far too many honest students who deserve an honest academic environment in which to pursue their studies.

Well fuckin A. My school is full of assholes and shitheads so I figured someone ratted me (or other people) out. Either way, I figured I was going to have to face the music (hahaha) so I figured approaching him before he approached me was probably my best bet. Since he was gone for the day, the best I could do was email. I sent this...

Dear (instructor name);
I would have liked to tell you this in person but I will have to
settle for email. For quiz 4, I fall into that category. The last
two months have been rough as I have been very ill. I wrote the
names of the songs on a piece of paper because I could not even come
close to spelling them no matter how hard I tried. I have been to
all of your classes except when I have been too ill to attend and I
have participated as I am sure you have noticed. I have pages upon
pages of lectures and my entire book is highlighted with side notes.
While I am by no means a slacker, this is by no means any excuse for
my actions. I don't know if the email you sent pertains to me or not
but I would rather come clean with my actions. I realize their will
be consequences but I messed up and I will have to accept those
consequences. I have never done this on another test or quiz ever.
While I can't prove that, I hope that you can take my word, as I have
been honest enough to admit this without a direct accusation. I
didn't want to dissapoint my family, you as the instructor and
especially myself; I have just done all three. I am sorry I have put
your integrity on the line and I will be more than willing to
apologize personally to you or anyone else that you may desire.
Doing what I did was a mistake, and admitting in the eyes of many
others may also be a mistake, but I want to do the right thing. I
screwed up, I can't change that I screwed up, and the best I can do
is apologize and learn from my error. I am sincerely sorry to both
you and my fellow students.
The instructor's a great guy and I felt pretty shitty all in all. I've already failed music 100 once and it would be embarassing as hell to fail it again. It would be serious humil. Since I had the feeling my cards were stacked anyway, I sent the email and decided to live and learn and apologize.
Did I do the right thing? And how badley do you think I'm gonna be grilled?
you did the right thing, but it would be funny if he wasn't talking about you or reported somebody else. But either way, good job and it won't be too bad, you shound't get kicked out of school or anything.
What the hell... you tried... and if they're re-giving the test, at least they're not flunking anyone. If I were the teacher, I'd just delete your mail and tell you "Good Luck on the retake, don't do it again.".

chances are he knew u cheated....who knows, maybe u were the only one who cheated and somene burned you out..and of course he had to send the email to every student. i think u did the right thing and u took a HUGE risk because he mightve been bluffing too. this reminds me of a time in my computer class in high school, my teacher was a dick and wrote his email on the board....so in class, i created a new email acct and sent him an email totally shitting on him and explaining i was in his class and all this stuff. after he got the email he made a BIG deal out of it, principal came in and stated the student would be expelled...the teacher then said he knew who the student who sent the email was, and if that certain sudent confessed, the punishment wouldnt be as severe. i, realizing i fucked up and potentially can be expelled assumed the teacher was bluffing and let it go....turns out he was bluffing because he never called me on it.
it would be even funnier if he did it as a joke...he is a pretty joking guy. that all dawned on me after i sent it.
if he did it as a joke, he shouldnt be really able to do anything about it, because thats a form of entrapment by making such harsh consequences...he would end up being in trouble too.
If it was a joke, tell him that your reply was a joke too.
Good move coming clean. Professors appreciate that kind of integrity, because most students have none or less. Odds are that if it's not a joke, you'll just get a slap on the wrist if that because you fessed up.

err, you might get an F in the class, some profs/schools take that shit seriously, even if you do confess. They won't kick you out of school I don't think though. Moral of story, don't ever cheat, at least not on a quiz, save it for the final.
