Every so often I browse the Z-Car area of the board, and go through the Sentra parts etc, and here everybody going on about "Skyline Tail Lights" or "Skyline this", "Skyline that", "I wish I had a RB".....
Next I'm at my GF's house watching TV on her cable connetion and some add for a Computer game (Need for speed underground) comes on and shows a Sentra (pulsar) SE-R transform to a R34 GT-R......and 2 Fast 2 Furious, when the R34 rocks up.....I can just imagine every Nissan freak (not a bad term, I'm one myself!) drooling over it....
Now please answer me this, are Americans Skyline obsessed because of computer games over the last few years? Hell did they even race in the states when they where new? I rember (probably everybody of my age) seeing the R32 GTR's race in the ATCC (I'm Australian), so I can understand us lusting after them, but you guys? Sorry I just don't get it.....unless you learn EVERYTHING car related off computer games...."OMG that car drives sooo good in that game, I'm going to dedicate my life to getting one..."
And this mythic reputation that Skylines have in the hearts and minds of American nissan freaks, the RB26DETT engine, they are not that much better than everything else....Don't get me wrong they are a VERY good cars (R30-R34) but reputation doesn't count for everything, I drove a R34 GTR and I was not impressed, yet when I drove a R32 GTR and R31 GTS-R I was very impressed.....I havent driven a GTR R33, but the normal GTS-T with a RB25DET is a nice car, not too fast, but it has one of the most perfectly loaded diffs know to man kind....
As for the RB motors, hell they are quite good every car I've owned has had some sort of RB in it (And I'm building a RB monster, a RB30/25 vvt) BUT THEY ARE NOT GOD!!! I have killed 2 of them, unbreakable.....sif....and anytime you caution somebody about doing sumthing to a RB motor they say "but in Japan" ...... Japan doesn't count for anything.......
Sorry for the rant, a inbox full of Skyline/RB related stuff eg "there's no such thing as a RB30", "How do I put xx Skyline part on my Sentra" , "how do I put a RB in my FWD car"....its just put me on edge......
WHY GUYS?!?!! WHY!!!!!

I can bet that a good percentage of todays American import tuners did get there first exposure to the Skyline from a game or a movie.
Remember, until the V35 no Skyline was ever offered in the states. That alone helped to give it a "god-like" appeal.
I am lucky enough to know a handful of Skyline owners, and have been able to experience them first hand on many occasions. I still think they are some of the coolest cars I've ever seen in person.
As far as people wanting to put Skyline parts on their Sentra/200SX...most of that is for show. As far as the people that want to drop an RB into their Sentra...well they are just delusional.

Its exactly like you said, if we think its good in the computer game out of all those cars that can be modified, and it was in 2 fast 2 furious, then we think it should be worshipped and all time and money be devoted to it. We think if its the best that weve seen movies and video games, and this car truly exists, then lemme at it. (Im American too)
I think it's like anything that you can't have. If you can't have it you want it more.
I personally HATE the look of the R34. The quarter panels just look way to big for the rest of the car. I'd Love to, however, own an R33 or R32.

/me looks in parts pile, a few RB's, Skyline gearboxs, a Complete burnt out R33........I have hands on experience playing with this stuff......
Still, my first contact with a Skyline was a R31 Stationwagon owned by my Family......what a beast...lol

Vehicles as status symbols?
Every vehicle with age, eventually breaks down, so to me it doesn't matter what type of vehicle I own, I look for dependability, gas mileage, and storage capacity. Status is lame, being married, you don't care that much for status, especially if someone else gets jealous(someone always does, and keys your car, tries to steal it, etc.) But thats just me, I would rent a nice car for long trips, maybe a ride around town for a special ocassion, but to own one would be too much stress on my mind.

I can't figure out why people want them so bad here either. To me they look like average boxy cars from the early 90s but people get hardons for WRX's and EVO's too and they aren't exactly the hottest looking cars. To me it seems people like them so much so they can show their fellow car dorks hey I have a skyline. I'd say another reason is from what i've seen over the last 5 years or so on various nissan boards, is a lot of hardcore nissan brand loyal people and to nissan people the skyline is the top car ever made.

Exactly!!! Part of the attraction is that you'll (meaning most americans) will never own one. Kind of like, if your banging the hot chick next door (350Z) you're still spanking it to that hot car model (Skyline)

What a car looks like is unimportant. It's how it functions that matters. As for styling, personally, I like the styling of the Skyline ( R32-34), it's much nicer looking than ANYTHING Nissan makes now since it DOES look boxy! I hate sleek, modern looking cars and would probably take a mid 60's Skyline over a R34 if I was just going for styling. But yeah, they are a little overplayed. However, there are cars that were made here that are VERY desireable in other countries which most of the import scene dislikes. Import people don't like large displacement V8's for the most part but there is a big market for American Big Block musclecars in some places. It all comes down to taste I guess. Maybe obscurity (in this country) is one of the reasons I have an Austin Mini fetish-I dunno. And yes, the number of idiots who want to bolt a RB26DETT into their Sentra is disturbing. I get 1-2 E-Mails a month from some idiot who wants to do that-without cutting anything!
