As some of you may know, the Vancouver Police charged Boston Bruins enforcer Marty Mcsorley for info with video of the stick hit Assault with a weapon during an NHL game here in Vancouver for knocking Donald Brashier unconsiouss with a stick hit to the side of the head.
Last night, Canucks power forward Todd Bertuzzi sucker-punched Colorado Avalanche young tough guy Steve Moore, knocking him unconcious so he was take off the ice in a stretcher and to hospital.
Same sort of incident, and now with the precident set for charging players with crimes when on ice, here in British Columbia, should we charge Bertuzzi?
To me, when players strap on those skates and play for money, they are taking on an assumtion of risk when playing, that certain events may occur, like a fight. However, incidents like these go beyond the regular clutch and grbas, slasehes, trips and fights, and enter the world of thuggery and assault. When 2 players fight, it is something they do face to face, standing up to each other. This blindsiding a player is not in the same category as other aspects of the game. The police should investigate this incident, at the very least.

Reason: speeling :)
But why are they doing this. bringing the police in the sport unless there is serious intentional harm done. Its getting wierd now. with diffrent sports enacting something that pushes some kind of buttons.

To me this is serious harm. It isn't a fight where two people aggree to go, or a trip on a play. That stuff happens, and that's hockey, but for a guy to be mugged from behind, that isn't part of the game.
Well it's a sporting event and FCS you're right, there is a certain amount of risk involved and they know this going in. I don't think anyone who laced up that night expected to be a Rodney King wanna be. Police Involvement? No. These are adults, playing a sport for money so........hit 'em where it hurts. Fine this Asshole $20,000 and suspend him for 5 games.
bertuzzi is going to face charges, probably formally charged later this week... he is suspended indefinately w/o pay, and will be in the NHL offices today or tomarrow for a hearing... Moore is still in the hospital with aconcussion and a broken neck from hitting the ice...

Personally, I don't think McSorely should have been charged. But since he was, I feel Bert may face something similar. I think our society has become far too regulated and controlled, with everyone relying on the police or government. This is just another example of intrusions into private lives, in this case, sports.
What's next? Swat teams decending apon Caesar's palace as soon as the first punch is thrown in a boxing match?
am i the only one who sees a difference between Burtuzzi and McSorley??? Mc hit brashear in the face with his stick.... i d say intent to injure... Burt hit him in the head(helmet) with his hand... i know it was a cheap shot, but cmon, he didnt mean to break his neck.... i think it was disgusting, but i think he is being perseciuted for something that happened in the light of a bad descision.... i can see the seasonlong ban, but next season??? i dunno bout that one, the canucks getting a quarter mil in fines..? i think that is BS

obviously bertuzzi didnt intentionally break his neck, but he was more aggressive than necessary in the situation, he acted wrongly in the situation and something has to be done about it. Since the bad blood was already there between the cunucks and Moore because of Moore hit earlier, so he did want to retaliate, I'm sure he had no intention on hospitalization, he just wanted to let the guy feel some pain, but when you break somebody neck and risk the rest of there life on the line, you also have to put your own life on the line. You have to pay for your actions whether they be in sports or out, and I hope the punishment meets the crime.
