Need Home Network help> How do I get a Win 98SE machin and a XP Home to connect?

Machine A is running Win 98SE
Machine B is runing Win XP Home Edition

I have a direct connection with a CROSSOVER Cat5 cable between the two.

All I want to do is access one with the other.

I have read this cant be done some places, yet others say no problem.

Help me out here peeps. I've worked on this for a week with no results. Guess taking Cisco I & II in high school didnt do much for me.

you'd be better off going to a hole in tha wall comp shop, n getting like a 15 dollar 4-8 port hub

BUT, if you only wanna use the crossover cable. thas fine too

first question, do they see each other, but wont let you into them, or they both dont see each other?

either way...
on both comps, go into the networking properties, right-click on the local area connection, and enable it if it isnt already. if it is enabled, disable it. then, right-click again, properties.

click Internet Protocl(TCP/IP), and then properties. amke sure BOTH computers have the "Obtain IP automatically" enabled. if its not, enable it. on win98 i think you have to restart. xp ya dont. just click ok heh

when the 98 comp comes back up, go back into the network neighborhood, and enable the loacal area connection.

on the xp comp, same thing. HOPEFULLY you will be able to get to both computers, if not, idunno, never really messed with crossover cable, just hubs switches n routers.

actually, if that doesnt work, again go into where it said "obtain IP Automatically", and select "Use the following IP address"

put in as an IP addy 192.168.1.1 for one comp, and 192.168.1.2 for the other.

I'm beginning to hate networking. I've been the house tech here for 4 years trying to keep everything smooth with our 7 computers...

Does one of these two computers connect to the internet, or have two LAN cards in it? If so you need to bridge those connections, but that shouldn't effect the computers ability to see each other....

I have very little experience with crossover cables, but the networking info should be the same. Actually, you can probably run the Win XP network setup to config the one computer, then transfer the same setting to the Win 98 machine via a floppy disc.

Make sure both computers are on the same network and that their LAN card hardware drivers are working properly. (Control Panel - System - Hardware Profile)

xp and 98se won't see each other on a network unless you install the xp networking files on the 98se comp. try that.
