I'm unaware if this topic has been spoke of, or talked about in this discussion forum. But, the Gran Turismo collection has been one of the best racing games, to my knowledge. In the newly Gran Turismo 4, online play is going to be avalible for those with network adapters on their PS2's.
As one of the most popular game franchises in the world, worldwide unit sales for all three titles combined is nearly 30 million while unit sales for North America are more than 12 million.
“In Gran Turismo 4, automotive racing is much more than a sport, it is a lifestyle as we take advantage of the highly successful game mechanics of its predecessor and present an even more, in-depth racing experience with all new features,” said Ami Blaire, director, product marketing, Sony Computer Entertainment America. “Due to its cutting-edge technology, enhanced online mode and worldwide anticipation, we are confident that Gran Turismo 4 will meet the demand of our fans and automotive enthusiasts while reaching out to new PlayStation 2 users.”
In Gran Turismo 4, the characteristics of the cars are realistically designed and calculated so that they handle to the “real-life” physics of that particular vehicle, taking into account weight, speed, friction, wind, and more. To further enhance the realism of the driving experience, new technology blends real-time action with a photo-fixed background to immerse the player in real-life environments such as New York City, the Grand Canyon and others. Highly detailed vehicles and environment mapping create broadcast-quality graphics, from light and competitor car reflections on the player’s automobile to leaves on a tree shaking in the wind.
The online mode features a robust system for players to race with up to six other players and interact and chat with others to form an automotive community.
In offline gameplay, players will have the opportunity to race in an enhanced arcade and simulation mode based upon similar game mechanics from Gran Turismo 3 A-spec. In both modes, players will have access to experience more than 500 authentic automobiles encompassing manufacturers from around the world, with a range from vintage to modern vehicles. Courses include existing closed racing circuits to specially designed city courses, reaching a total count of up to 100 tracks.
The arcade mode allows players to compete against each other or the artificial intelligence on select courses. The simulation mode allows players to start from the bottom and earn their way up the ladder as they acquire driving licenses, race to earn money, unlock cars and courses, buy and sell cars, upgrade parts and compete in various championships. Playable from both first- and third-person perspectives, Gran Turismo 4 offers advanced opponent behavior to capture real-life racing and unpredictability of finishes.

There's supposed to be an online car shop feature too. Supposedly, Polyphony isn't going to stop making cars for the game after it comes out and you'll be able to connect to a server with the network adapter and buy new cars that are made available each month. I'm hoping for a Classic SE-R!

i was thinking about the X-Box once, the power looked awesome, but then i realized that a.) all my favorite games were STILL being released for the PS2, and b.) all of the X-Box titles are also out on the PC (we've got a new GeForce KickAss Card).... the only thing the X-Box has going for it is Halo, but no way am i playing another FPS on the console... i'm keeping my Rainbow Six, thank you.
online would be great, too bad my satellite internet won't let me do streaming for some reason...
as for the cars...
the 200sx was on GT2
Type R was on GT, GT2, GT3
Cooper was on GT Concept Geneva
Audi is on GT3 (S4)
Mazda is on GT3 (Miatas and RX's)
REX's are on GT
VW is on GT...
only question is if Dodge would go for it... (they've only put Vipers on...)

i think they will get it out before christmas so they can make massive sales, ill be glad to park my car in the garage and save the milage may even sell it cause i know when this comes out ill be on it every night for hours, it just seems endless, the best bit has to be the cars being produced everymonth. No racing game will beat this if it lives up to its expectations
You know, for the PS2 supposedly being weaker than the XBOX, GT4 is the best looking game I've ever seen. I read that there's something about the way the 2 systems are set-up that means the XBOX is actually weaker. The XBOX is a simplified PC with a powerful graphics card. ALL developers already know how to develop for a PC, therefore, ALL of the games are going to be pumping out maximum power outta the 'BOX from day 1. Now, the PS2 on the other hand was a completely new design(in 2000) so it takes time for developers to learn how to pull the most from the hardware, whereas 3D PC games have been around for about 10 years with the only change being the capabilities of the hardware, not the design. Polyphony themselves even said that "because of our relatively low experience with the EE hardware, GT3 is utilizing only 25% of the console's abilities.".....now that's exciting.
experienced that with the last GT... was waiting forever.
doesn't matter, i still get a lot of fun out of my GT3 A-Spec... i've run through Need for Speed Hot Pursuit, Midnight Club II, Tokyo Extreme II, and Auto Modellista... all nice games in their own right, but all shelved now... while my poor scratched up old GT3 still gets the crap beaten out of it every other night...
fun things to do... race championships with a fully modified Mini Cooper 1.3i... these things can seriously grip.
