Well,
I've been into cars long before I could drive one. When I got my first car (88 integra) I was into any scene about it (nothing, except my own stuff) then my sentra and again nothing until about the end of my second year owning it, when a market started to take off for accessories that didn't have to take a month to get.
I remember when there was no 'import scene' it was just intakes, cut springs, and chrome, lots of chrome.
I don't consider myself really apart of the scene, I never go to any of the shows (mainly because there are none by me unless they are on a saturday) and I don't spend money on parts that won't help me on something I don't need. Get brakes if yours are bad, get new springs if yours are shot. I just try to keep my car running in top shape and try to adjust it to my driving style as best as i can so I'm happy with it. But if others just want to make their car a showcase thats fie by me, I'll go watch and hope that others get into thier cars because of it.
A car is a terrible thing ot waste.
SOLM got me into building Sentras. Yannick's B13 project got me into building my Sentra - I followed his every move, doing what he did, only about six months later.
Then, in 2001, I met NW Nismo at the Woodburn dragstrip. I became friends with them (Sean and Jamie in particular), and moved to Seattle last September. Sean conned me into helping with his car, and I've loved every minute of it.

I would say the same thing.
Other than that, I hate the import scene, I just like cars, and sometimes it seems like the import scene casts a nasty shadow on all car enthusiasts, especially since TFATF
i hate low-riders...i have hated them since i could remember...i dont respect how some of the import scene has become..ever since the "movie" came out....everybody and their mom thinks that a colored dome bulb and a wing so big that you can produce children on it makes you the fastest thing that rolles on 2 steelies and 2 rims.....as much as i love cars that you can see "actual" effort was put into, some just go to far....dam i just sailed from one subject to the next......ok ok ok .......i like the import scene because i have a import.........
ohh and KOOPA..... to add to your list of three you put SPEED RACER,SESAME STREET, AND PORN........
i think SPAM helped me.......when i heard SPAM sizzle on the frying pan i knew it was time for the track...........vvvvrrrrroooooooooommmmmmmmmm

There is no real strong scene around here. My dad's been doing amateur racing at our local short track for a few years, and my uncle used to be a GM R&D tech; cars are in the blood I guess. I've always enjoyed the thrill of speed and i like to take stuff apart, so I guess the two go hand-in-hand when it comes to cars. I have an appreciation for all cars (except geo metros) and I guess I just latched onto Nissan because its inexpensive to tune, its a challenge, and we own three. After some research on Nissan, though, I seriously do believe the company, despite failure to properly market its products, has the best engineering for its price range around. I also like imports because I feel like I need to correct the damage done by ricers in my area. There's a Maxima GT-R and a "turbo" '88 camry in my school parking lot, and they're just the tip of the iceberg...
Most definitely not in the import scene. My car is bone stock, save for clear corners, a spoiler, and an aftermarket CD player. I've toyed with the idea of getting some tint, intake, exhaust, etc. but decided that in the end, I'd still have a Sentra, but a Sentra that would get harassed by cops. Now the only thing I plan to do is get some wheels to cancel those hideous 13" wheel covers, but I've got to wear these tires out, first.
The import scene arond here consists mostly of idiots, though. You remember when you were like 5 years old, and you had a sticker book full of every sticker you could get your hands on??? Well 12 years later, these same kids have moved on, and their sticker book is now their car. There's a kid down the road from me with an old Nova. By old, I mean like a 1990, the little boxy kind with a 4 banger, not a 70's model. Anyway, he proudly drives this Nova with a 4" exhaust tip and tons of stickers, but my favorite is the one in the back window that says "Powered by Hemi" He tries to race everyone and I could beat him if I were driving my John Deere tractor, I do believe.
Thats the typical import scene around here. Another reason I'm not into it.
