Actually, I have an S15 on the way and I would consider selling it. I love S15's so don't let people fool you, even though many cars are brought in illegally and cannot be titled or registered, there is a legal way to do things. Let me know if you are interested.
its hard to explain how to have an imported car registered legally. but to sum it up, it can be registered in the state legally, but it still will not be federally legal. so the government can still impound the car, even if you're in the registered state.
That is, if you are trying to import a Nissan through a registered importer and get the car federalized. My S15 is a re-manufactured unibody that will be registered as a kit car / home built car / specially constructed vehicle. It is the same process in which you would buy a Noble.
ok, i didn't realize you were talking about registering it as a kit car. i totally forgot about doing it that way, but i think that'd be the best way to register it.
Yeah, I bought the unibody from Kaizo Industries and then purchased a motor and trans from a shop here in California. As long as you have all of your documentation, it is completely legal. You can even get one of the 500 kit car exemptions in California and get a California title, reg and plates.
There is another way of getting a Syliva, or Skyline, or a variety of other JDM cars, just move to Japan like I did. These cars are as common as nails here, and just as cheap. I look at how much people are selling these for in the states and laugh my a$$ off.
I know of several cars for sale in my neighborhood for sale right now. The car lot on the other side of town has all kinds of things, an EVO 5 for $7k, an EVO 3 for $4k, and a 98 Skyline GTS for only $5.5k
The other dealer has a 95 TT Surpa for $7k, and a clean 94 RX-7 for $6k
it would be too much of a hassle. and not to mention you have to pay for your own parking spot in japan, and from what i've been told, there's a lot more than just that. its very expensive to own a car there. but you don't realize that most people can't leave where they are just cause they want to.
