There was actually a thing about that a while ago and I think you need a warrant to do it to houses. I think the police used an infrared scanner an detected a lot of heat coming from some guy's garage. Turns out he was growing pot, but they couldn't use that as evidence against him. I don't know how true this story is though because I heard it a long time ago and probably got the details mixed up.
