It is about image, and learned behavior/the environment you grew up in. Americans want to look stylish, and flashy, and have the biggest and best of everything. (I'm saying this in general, I'm not saying all Americans want this idea)
The reason why the poor buy flashy items and waste their welfare check on designer jeans is also brought about by their environment. It is a learned behavior/habit, just like how Middle Class Americans tend to invest in stocks and retirement funds. Besides, the poor really have no future, they might as well spend their money now on new and flashy things.
yea, but it doesn't have to be that way.. We had a person in our company that made like 15k a year as a janior and invested in the company stock when it was pretty new and now he is a millionaire. Same happened in many other companies, like Ryan Homes and Target. If you settle for poor, then you will always be.

Then not at the inception.... It wasn't .36 a share 20 years ago..
Target Corporation NYSE: TGT was founded in Minneapolis, Minnesota in 1962.
