Now I'm usually good with computers, but this one has me dumbfounded. For one of my classes I need to use Remote Desktop Connection. I looked where they said it would be in Start>Programs>Accessories>Communications and it isn't there. So I popped in my Windows XP CD to install it, but it won't install, saying that this version of Windows comes with it. I searched the computer and eve chacked the registry and I can find no evidence of this ever existing on my computer. It still won't install. So now I need to find a way to install Remote Desktop Connection without reformating my computer. Can I do it using the Repair Windows Utility after booting from the XP cd? Any help is appreciated.

You would either copy the i386 file from the disc to you hard drive or just put the disc in the drive. Then go to add/remove software in the control panel. After you click that, on the left side of the window that comes up will be an option to add/remove windows components. See if its there, if it is when you go to install it will need the disc/i386 file to install from.
Also be sure its configured the way you need it by going to My Computer/right click/properties/remote
Check the services screen under my comp/right click/manage/services. See if its there at all, or just disabled.
If you run out of options, you can reinstall windows w/o losing your stuff. Insert disc like you were going to wipe the drive and rebuild windoze. Select install windows (not repair). Do not reformat/fdisk, but instead install win over the previous copy. This should leave all your files/settings intact, but will rebuild windows. Also, be sure your disk is sp2, because you cannot do this with a disk of a lower grade of win. You may have to slipstream a copy 1st.
