Russian Special Services: Google Earth Helps Terrorists

International terrorists will become regular users of Google’s new project Google Earth, a source in the Russian Special Services was quoted as saying.

Earth.Google.Com was launched this summer and distributes free photos made from space that have a capacity to view objects as small as 2 meters.

“On these pictures terrorists will see all that they need to carry out an attack in any part of the world,” the source said.

Russian military expert, Lt.-Gen. Leonid Sazhin, said that “from now on international terrorists do not have to inspect the site of a would-be terrorist attack. An international company is doing the work for them”.

Google Earth is a standalone Windows application that’s essentially an enhanced and upgraded version of the Google Keyhole product that was produced after Google purchased Keyhole in October 2004.

The application combines local search capabilities with satellite imaging and maps from around the globe. Currently it includes detailed imagery of the U.S., Canada and the United Kingdom, as well as many major cities in other countries. The medium to high resolution terrain provides a detailed view of the entire world.

Google Earth provides the option of displaying local lodging, road markers, terrain, local dining options, geographical borders and 3D buildings over the satellite image. Its “Fly To” feature accepts an address, place name, cross street or simple Latitude/Longitude coordinates and zooms quickly in to the specified location.

A free version is available on the Google website, while advanced users can purchase its optional upgrade Google Earth Plus with GPS device support.

lol...I saw this. I could see it happening but a better way for a terrorist to 'study' an area is to actually go there and plan everything out. Google maps are a little out of date, at least 2 years from what I've seen.

I guess you could put CNN, The Internet in general, and Librarys into that hat as well

I find it sorta ironic that this comes from the Russian Special Services ...ie..new name for the KGB

this is nothing new.
First, google earth isn't new. keyhole has been around for a while.
Also map sites have been online for a long time. Terra server etc.
Also you think they are showing anything the terrorists don't already know?

The Thai's don't like it....

Quote:
Google Earth Viewed a Concern by Thailand Security

Google launched its Google Earth web service and the offline software with much fanfare. However, the application has invited a lot of criticism from all around for lack of security features. It shows images taken from satellites of the world and even let the users peek on the top of the buildings. Thailand is one such country, which is covered massively by it, and the security agencies there are afraid that the application can be used by terrorist organizations to get a closer look at their government buildings and target them in the future.

Thai security agencies consider the application a potential threat to their national security and are considering whether they should ask the company to block images of some of their potentially important government and military buildings, which are vulnerable to attack from the malicious members of the society.

The Thai military is expected to discuss the issue with telecommunications and security agencies before approaching Google and other companies like Microsoft, which have or are in the process of launching similar global mapping services. Armed Forces spokesperson Maj. Gen Weerasak Manee-in said in a statement to a news agency: “We are looking for possible restrictions on these detailed pictures, especially state buildings. I think pictures of tourist attractions should do.”

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ground_zero

Quote:
Ground zero
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
Ground zero is the exact location on the ground marking the detonation point of any bomb; in the case of a bomb designed to explode in the air, it refers to the point on the ground directly below the bomb at the moment of detonation.

Since it is the impact point for the bomb, it is, of course, the point of highest damage. Around that spot are drawn concentric circles showing how far out from the impact point the damage is.

The term has chiefly come to be associated with nuclear explosions, but is also used for earthquakes, epidemics and other disasters.

It was military slang—used at the Trinity site where the weapon tower for the first nuclear weapon was at point 'zero'—and moved into general use very shortly after the end of World War II (see Manhattan Project).

Funny, I've never heard of an epicenter for an earthquake called ground zero..
